GMC Hummer EV's Weight Shows GM Completely Missed the Point With EVs

The massive electric pickup truck made some headlines these days because of its enormous weight. It already had raised concerns from safety specialists frightened with what a 9,063 pounds (4,103 kilograms) accelerating from 0 to 60 mph (97 kph) in 3 seconds could represent in traffic.

The battery pack alone weighs 2,923 lb (1,326 kg). It has a usable capacity of 212.7 kWh. Car and Driver calculated its gross capacity, and that’s 246.8 kWh. We have already mentioned it weighs as much as compact cars such as the Toyota Corolla ...

... The Rivian R1T achieves a 70 MPGe rating, which is 49% superior to what the GMC EV presents.

Mary Barra is dreaming that a ship transporting thousands of new EV Hummers could sink mid-ocean.

Think how bright a battery powered ship would burn.

And Rivian’s 100 mile range towing a lightweight 5,000 trailer shows NONE of these Eco warriors understand what trucks are for.

Diesel electric Hybrid, morons.

I do not think they are going to make a lot of them.

How many Cadillac ELR were sold ?

As the article states, it is a Halo car.

a few rappers, some famous actors, some drug dealers, and a few people who have a small appendages will buy these

Just Dumb. They know their buyers: rich douchebags and YouTube influencers, all subsidized by our tax dollars.

A 3,000 pound battery has a usable capacity of 212.7 kWh.

A gallon of low sulphur diesel fuel has 137,381 BTU which is equivalent to 40.2 kWh. A 30 gallon tank of diesel has 1,200 kWh.

Diesel fuel weighs 7 pounds per gallon, so that 30 gallon tank weighs 210 pounds for the fuel. Assume the tank weighs 50 pounds. That 30 gallons of diesel and tank weight about 9% of the weight of the battery pack and has six times the energy content.

F=MA is still a valid law, so the energy cost to accelerate that 3,000 pound battery and electric motors is probably a lot more than the energy to accelerate the diesel engine, transmission, and fuel. Of course, you have regenerative braking in the electric truck which you don’t get in the ICE truck.

It makes more sense to liquify coal and deliver those liquid hydrocarbons than it does to convert to electric vehicles.

“Interesting truck Dave.”

“Thanks Hal. Best part is it has a 100 mile range.”

“Wait - that’s a good thing?”

“Yeah, then I only have to be in it for less than 2-hours a day.”

I just got done with a 1,650 mile trip. 12 hours one day, 11.25 the next day. Boy I’m glad I like my vehicle. (And that it is gas!)

0-60 in 3 seconds. Hit the accelerator instead of the brake by accident, or ON PURPOSE, It becomes the deathmobile..You cant stop a 5 ton vehicle in <175' feet. Thats 10 cars smashed and stomped because someone could go 0-60 in 30 secounds. Willingly or not.

oh the humanity !

There was an accident in the parking lot of a fast food place. Small parking lot, three cars totaled! One of them was a Tesla. That’s what I’m thinking happened - they hit the gas instead of the brake. Only way I can imagine to have that much damage in the 20 feet of space in the lot.

With the exception of the new ‘Vette, GM cannot even spell “point”.

My nephew has a new full size GMC diesel pickup and he gets 31 mpg on the highway. Add electric motors and it could tow 12,000 lbs and have a 500 mile range doing it ( or 1,000 mile range not towing)

If there is 10x more electric cars in the US in 5 years, the need for pickups that can tow 10,000lbs (to go rescue them) will greatly increase.

<>The battery pack alone weighs 2,923 lb<>

AND, assuming it doesn’t burn down your house, and unlike your gas vehicle, it loses energy (but not weight) sitting overnight in your garage.

On the bright side, Jen Psaki, on behalf of Brandon, wants you to own an EV.
