So how deep is the water that a ship will anchor (ie, how long is the anchor chain?

A ship carries between 12 and 15 shots of anchor chain. A shot of chain is 15 fathoms or 90 feet.

The size and weight of a ship's anchor and chain are determined by, among other things, the ship's length, displacement, and wind cross section.

The general you pay out between four and seven times the water depth. This is also affected by size of the tide, current, wind, and bottom type. When in doubt, let out more chain.
