Beaches along the Oregon coastline warned tourists and residents of the danger, including “strong currents and dangerous waves.” With the threat of water potentially rising 1-3 feet higher than normal, the National Weather Service advised people to stay out of the water and away from the shore.
However, people who live and work in the coastal town tell KOIN 6 News after they heard the siren and got the emergency alert on their phones — they saw people doing the exact opposite.
“The next thing you know, we hear people outside and they’re running to the beach – which I don’t understand, I’d go the other way,” Seaside resident Esther Blackburn said.

Tsunamis produce a deluge that can appear quite benign at first, then it closes in on you and Vitamixes you in a swirl of land shrapnel.

That is what the warnings put out to the public SHOULD HAVR SAID. A WARNING that sounds benign, makes everyone laugh at the warning. Much like most Snow storm warnings of Snowmegeddon are little more than hype
The warning could have said “although waves may appear to only be 1-3 feet higher than usual, their speed and strength may be far stronger than they appear”. My disgust is the lack of information that was delivered

I always preferred the Pacific from the Oregon coast, vs say the Santa Monica coastline. A totally different vibe. A more isolated feeling I guess.
Another couple of small tsunamis and they’ll be conditioned to go to the beach to watch.

So there’s gonna be even less that’s normal if the waves arrive.
Probably the thinking was that a two foot tsunami would be safe to watch from ten feet above the tidal level, as I recall the beach at Seaside OR slopes down from a grassy plain that is about that high above sea level. Whether that is smart or Darwin award material is anybody’s guess, you have to factor in whether or not the science is so exact that the forecast would be right.
I saw video on the news of a tsunami hitting Peru from this, and it looked a bit bigger than 1-2 feet, maybe because they are closer to Tonga. It looked more like a mini version of the Thailand disaster of 2004. From what I heard nothing much happened in North America with this one, so it was just an ordinary day at the beach.
Like when those hurricanes were line dancing through Florida some years back and they wouldn’t even leave the beach for the latter storms.
“The beach” is a sixty foot tall bluff on much of Oregon’s coast. People go out and stand on that. The water is 50 degrees. Nobody plays in it.
Yup. Are you familiar with the stretch north of Bandon? World class golfing destination up on the bluff, miles of beach between that and the ocean, and you may not see another person.
