Want to avoid glaucoma? Look at what you eat (One cup of tea a day reduces risk by 74%)
Medical Xpress / British Journal of Ophthalmology ^ | Jan. 10, 2022 | HealthDay / Glaucoma Research Foundation

Glaucoma is group of eye diseases that cause progressive vision loss through damage to the optic nerve. It is the second-leading cause of blindness.

Fruits and veggies are good sources of vitamins A and C, as well as the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. These can protect against oxidative stress associated with damage to the optic nerve and other tissues of the eye in glaucoma. A study that included 584 Black women found that those who consumed three or more fruit or juice servings daily were 79% less likely to have glaucoma than those who had less than one.

Research has found a link between kale and spinach consumption and a reduced risk of glaucoma, the foundation said. Eating leafy greens is also linked to lower rates of inflammation, cancer, heart disease and even the eye disorder macular degeneration.

Nuts and seeds are good sources of vitamin E, important for keeping cells healthy and protecting them from free radical damage, which can break down protective retinal tissues.

It also suggests fish, particularly salmon, tuna, sardines and halibut, which have high levels of the omega-3 fatty acids that have been shown to lower glaucoma-related eye pressure.

A study in the British Journal of Ophthalmology found that people who drank at least one cup of hot tea daily lowered their glaucoma risk by 74% compared to those who did not.

The foundation also suggested chocolate, bananas, avocados, pumpkin seeds and black beans for their health benefits.

People who are already living with glaucoma should avoid foods that contribute to metabolic syndrome, obesity, blood pressure problems, and diabetes. A diet that helps maintain normal blood pressure and blood sugar helps reduce glaucoma risk.

Eating a healthy number of calories, and limiting carbohydrates may also have benefits for the eyes, it added.

From Consumer Reports review of the study:

“Hot tea, however, was found to have a potential benefit. (Iced tea, decaffeinated tea, and any kind of soda appeared to have no connection to changing one’s glaucoma risk.)”

So I would assume normal black hot tea, but it’s not a given.

Does that include brown tea or just green tea?

I’ve had glaucoma for about 15 years. I’ve used every drop there is. I’ve also had laser surgery and a trabeculectomy on each eye. My pressure has normalized after years of numbers from the low 20s to the mid 30s.I also no longer drive at night, but I’m grateful for the vision I still have. I’ve lost most peripheral vision.

I told the doctor I get a sharp pain in my eye every time I drink a cup of tea.

He told me to take the spoon out of the cup.

Being serious for a moment. Actially since I stopped soda years ago my teeth have gone from cavity central to healthy. Add I drink lots of coffee and soda and grape juice. Its the soda that has been the tooth killer for me, and only the soda.

I am going to encourage both of you to consider the following:

- Slanting your bed (especially if a side sleeper)
- Ergothioneine (an antioxidant) or eating mushrooms several times a week
- Astaxanthin (4 mg)
- Life Extension Eye Pressure Support (special bilberry extract and pycnogenol)
- Citicoline (1,000 mg)
- Nattokinase

Some of the eye pressure can come from your own high blood pressure. Laying down increases eye pressure, too. Nattokinase can help remove artery plaques, as can statins (a prior study I posted on Free Republic shower the statin benefit). Citicoline was found to help glaucoma as a neural protectant, independent of eye pressure. The Eye Pressure Support formula was found to “significantly reduce interocular pressure” by the three month point. Ergothioneine is a fallback antioxidant when a cell’s normal antioxidants have been used up, as happens in eye cells under duress.

Someone I know just got the good news that their early stage glaucoma was basically reversed, with mostly these changes, coupled with looser clothes. Also, this person was taking brimonidine-only drops. Cells came back to life that looked dormant in the last scans.

This person also started taking multiple types of fiber they hadn’t been getting before, which could have helped their cholesterol lower.

Thanks for these suggestions.
Each will be considered, and I don’t see anything non logical or bizarre.
Not fun slowly losing the former precision level of my vision.

I’m making plans for the day when I no longer feel safe driving at all, not even during the day. That’s years away, hopefully.

“Its the soda that has been the tooth killer for me, and only the soda.”

I’ve never had another cavity since I switched to artificially sweetened drinks decades ago. And my blood glucose quit rising and started back down. I eat plenty of chocolate and that doesn’t seem to create any problems. Also, I take green tea extract in the form of a tincture (or capsules).
