President Joe Biden has righted the ship with his job approval numbers — according to a new survey.
CBS and YouGov put out a poll, on Sunday, which reveals that Biden’s job approval stands at 50 percent. This stands in stark contrast with other prominent, recent data. A Sept. 22 Gallup poll put Biden at 43 percent approval, while a Quinnipiac survey from earlier this week found only 38 percent approve of the president’s job performance.
Crucially, the CBS poll finds that Biden is gaining traction with independents. Forty-five percent of independents approve of the president’s job performance, according to the new survey, while 55 percent disapprove. That number is still below water, but far better than what other recent polls have turned up for Biden.
The president is not yet on the plus side of the ledger. Fifty percent of respondents in the CBS poll also disapprove of Biden’s work. Not surprisingly, that sentiment is nearly unanimous among Republicans — with 89 percent giving the president a thumbs-down.
The news wasn’t all good for Biden, though. The survey polled respondents on six key issues; the economy, infrastructure, Afghanistan, immigration, climate change, and Covid vaccine distribution. Only on that last issue do a majority of Americans (57-43) favor the president’s work. In particular, Biden posted dreadful numbers on immigration (34-66) and Afghanistan (37-63).

This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,054 U.S. adult residents interviewed between October 6-8, 2021. This sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, and education based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey, and the U.S. Census Current Population Survey, as well as 2020 presidential vote. The margin of error is ±2.6 points.

Just 37% of Americans rate the economy as very or fairly good – the lowest percentage since March, and for the second straight month, more than half feel the economy is in bad shape. And most Americans are not convinced that the Biden administration's domestic agenda would improve the economy.
