Does the military salute VPs?
Satellite feed | 10/8/2021

Posted on 10/08/2021 6:51:22 AM PDT by Recovering_Democrat

Question for military experts. I just saw a raw satellite feed of Sleepy Joe's sidekick Kamala getting on an airplane.

The military guys at the bottom of the stairs were standing still in a salute.

Um, maybe it is just me, but I do not recall ever seeing a person presumed to be the vice-president being saluted by men in uniform....that person is not the commander in chief.

Am I wrong?

That happened to me one summer at Wright-Patt. I was working a summer job with MWR (Morale Welfare, and Recreation).

I drove my Dad’s Buick to work with his Colonel insignia and got saluted at the gate. When the Sergeant I was working with rode with me to lunch, he got a huge kick out of the salutes coming back on to the base.

Howdy. Harris starting returning salutes to the military after my report at Gateway Pundit about her not doing so. Not dictated by protocol but has become a tradition upheld by Biden when he was veep.

Who in their right mind would respect this VP? (or POTUS, for that matter)

The Vice President of the United States receives a 19-gun salute, only two less than the 21-gun salute specified for the President of the United States. The Vice President certainly receives a hand salute in lieu when gun salutes are not used.

Some times, folks on FR commit unforced errors because they are not thinking straight.

I have said since Reagan revived the custom that I wish it would stop.

General of the Army Eisenhower did not receive or return salutes once he was elected, desiring to emphasize that the President was a civilian.

Good enough for Ike? MORE than good enough for Kamala Harris.

No they shouldn’t. The VP is not in the chain of command.

AR 600-25, Chapter 2, Salutes and Courtesies

2–1. Hand salutes and salutes with arms:

f. The President of the United States, as the commander in chief, will be saluted by Army personnel in uniform...

AR 600-25 makes no mention of the VEEP so no salute is required.

AR 600-25 also stipulates that saluting isn't required if either party is in civilian attire, except when one of the parties is POTUS, a former POTUS, a POTUS-elect or a foreign head of nation.

Well when the command structure cannot even read much less follow the regulations I have a problem with it. Guess that is why I retired a CW5. I read the regulations and held their feet to the fire.

So if it is not required that means it is not proper to render a salute.

Much like the should, shall and may. “shall” is used to indicate a mandatory requirement. The word “should” is used to indicate a non-mandatory but preferred method of accomplishment. The word “may” is used to indicate an acceptable method of accomplishment.

I'm unsurprised at a CW5 with a lack of responsibility for the troops around them.

Sadly.

“I’m unsurprised at a CW5 with a lack of responsibility for the troops around them.

Sadly you might be part of the problem. If you don’t know the regulations and blindly follow you become part of the problem. Troops under my care never were in need and followed the regulations. The first responsibility in the chain of command it to ensure the welfare of the troops. In todays military the command has forgot that basic premise. When it becomes all about I/Me things start falling into disarray. You must be a newly minted Butter Bar who says “In my experience”.

“Retired LTC with 28 years in uniform and 10 in Civil Service (GS-15).”

So which rater block on your OER had the comment “Would follow out of curiosity just to see what stupid thing he would do next”.

That is usually how morons like you get promoted so the chain can have a hoot watching your actions.
