Weekly Garden Thread - September 18-24, 2021
September 18, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 09/18/2021 5:23:47 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I worked with a guy whose wife was from Texas. She brought it to a gathering ONCE - and then she was NEVER allowed to come to any other gatherings without it.

It’s THAT good! :)

I was sedated with Valium. It really wasn’t bad at all, just a little unnerving on the first eye. I was more settled down for the second one a week later, I guess because I knew what to expect. The doctor was GREAT. Every step of the way he told me what was about to happen. He also described it in detail before I even agreed to do it.

Bottom line, it was about a 10-15 minute procedure. There’s barely anything that can go wrong if your doctor is experienced. Right now it may be put off because of staffing. I have a friend who is waiting for heart surgery because of short staffing. This stuff isn’t life-threatening. Hers is, and has still been postponed due to staffing shortages.

The doctor can put you to sleep, but I would talk with him about that. They have all these gadgets that help your eyes stay open during the cataract removal and lens implant. You’ll be surprised, but I just followed his directions to a T. Zero complications.

I definitely encourage anyone who has the chance to do this to go forward with it. It was life-changing for me. I have worn glasses since I was 10, graduated to contacts when I was in HS, then got Lasix in my mid-40s. After a while I still had to wear readers. When I got the cataract diagnosis, the lens implants became a possibility. I’m 61, and guess what? I get to live happily ever after! I will never need to wear glasses again. These multi-focal lenses are so unbelievably great. Wish I could’ve done this years ago!

Feel free to ask any questions.

It’s always good to go with your doctor’s recommendation. I was so surprised when my doctor recommended the mult-focal lens for me. I really had no idea what options I had left, if any.

This is an area where I believe trust is a huge thing. You must have full confidence in your doctor. I did mine. It sounds like you have that same confidence and respect for yours. God bless you and good luck!

Check out Floris Bar across the street from Delerium Tremins Cafe’.

Over 400 different brands of absinthe.

I missed it this year, UT my favorite beer festival in the world just happened in Brussels September 3rd to the 5th. Belgian Beer Weekend Festival takes place every year in Grand Place Brussels, where live music shows and the best beer breweries of Belgium offer variety of more than 400 different Belgian beers.

🍻🍻🍺

Check out Floris Bar across the street from Delerium Tremins Cafe’.

Delerium Village is legendary and it was supposed to be one of the highlights of our trip. We wanted to go to the Floris but the entire area around Grand Place was so wheelchair unfriendly we couldn't get there. Don't get me started on how bad Brussels is when it comes to disabled folk. We wouldn't go back there for free.

My wife, however, had the opposite experience. She was incorrectly measured as having astigmatism, which she did not have, and the first time, the lens was put in 120 degree out of proper orientation. The second time, she had damage to her eye. Now, she is going to have to wait and have a procedure to “correct” the astigmatism that the lens has created.

She is going to switch to my doctor. I sat in the examining room with her tor her latest checkup, listening to her doctor try to tap dance her way out of things. The doctor was terrified of my presence. She is a dipshit MD!

I am not a nice person when it comes to my wife’s health, happiness and safety!

We’re you just there labor day weekend. If so it would be beyond packed due to the beer festival. Ordinarily you can drive close to the destination.

Delerium is down stairs in a basement, but Floris is street level with just a few small steps.

That entire Grand Place area has been made pedestrian friendly so vehicles can’t get in. But even if they could the streets themselves were so bad for wheelchairs that after one day trying to see Grand Place we gave up on that part of town. We did take a private electric rickshaw tour that picked us up at our hotel and took us to see the major sights, stopping for photos along the way. but the only time I went back down there was when my wife was napping so I could take pictures. It just wasn’t worth it, even for Absinthe.

Ah yes, there are plenty of doctors that aren’t worth a hill of beans. You do have to search for the gems. My eye doctor is one of the gems. Make sure you have a gem of a doctor before you trust him/her to do any surgery.

I worked with doctors lots in my early years. I had a saying back then that I’ve stuck with. Good doctors are a dime a dozen, but the really exceptional doctors are priceless. That’s the kind you have to find.

That is exactly the doc I have. He did my Lasik and he got me from over 20-200 to 20-40. It changed my life.

Now, he has looked at my eyes and told me that he recommends far-sight with glasses for reading/computer, especially with having had Lasik.

My wife tried for the all in one, and she is finally, after months, getting her vision back, albeit with much more vibrant colors. She hates glasses, but she is not going to have a choice. The two botched operations prevent her from having another go at the surgery in her left eye.

My right eye surgery is currently scheduled for 15 December. That gives me time to get some heavy projects done. Starting my shop expansion into the garage. Finishing some roof expansion on the side deck, a couple of new raised beds and a cattle panel hoop house for the garden.

I now have to get back at the pantry renovation. I am blessed!

My Bad Attitude has done a 180! Upcoming weather looks spectacular for any and all gardening activities. We REALLY need rain, as we have ALL season, so rain Monday night into Tuesday morning would be a total blessing...especially for eking out one more cutting of hay. I did pull cucumber vines this morning and threw in Sugar Snap Peas in their place. Since I have two more HOT days to get through, I'm staying in and oven-roasting tomatoes, onions, garlic, EVOO and herbs for sauce and will spend the rest of the week playing outside between rain storms.

Heavy rains her in the PNW/Seattle area.

Between Friday night and Sunday night we qil have received more rain than we did since May combined.

Some tomatoes splitting are the only issues so far. Thanks God I staked every tomato plant with at least 1 bamboo pole.....and some have 3 and 4 with zipnties holding them steady.

Last year’s method of bamboo poles every 6 feet and twine bracing running back and forth would have failed the wind and rain this weekend.

Making pepper jelly tomorrow with half my jalepeno harvest.

Madera quick freezerbatch of spaghetti sauce/chili prep, foods average sealed.....made from herbs and tomatoes from the garden and saved in freezer to cook up this winter.

IIRC, absinthe made properly isn’t toxic, but if not made properly it could contain toxins from the wormwood.

But even bearing that in mind, it’s more likely that the problem was lead poisoning from the equipment used.

I read the original article this morning linked to another FR thread. We should be aware if this is a legitimate direction they are heading in. So may people just grab whatever is in the grocery store. Glad I saved more seeds this year than ever.

THANK YOU for all the info. I am glad I can wait another 6 months. My vision had not changed in 6 months - still 20/25. I am getting tired of using cheap readers, I get them at the dollar store and have them all over the house. I went from 2.00 to 2.50 to 2.75 and I just bought a pair of 3.25, maybe a bit strong. I did not know you could get replacement lenses that would correct that. Truly amazing. My opthamologist showed me on an eye model just what they replace , and it made me shiver just to see it. I have the dry macular degeneration and that has improved over the last year, I take those AREDS 2 eye vitamins.
