DEL RIO, Texas — U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Friday evening that it was temporarily closing the Del Rio Port of Entry and re-routing traffic from Del Rio to Eagle Pass.
It comes as thousands of Haitian migrants have assembled under and around a bridge in the small Texas border town, presenting the Biden administration with a fresh and immediate challenge as it tries to manage large numbers of asylum-seekers who have been reaching U.S. soil.
Images show Haitians crossing the Rio Grande in huge groups and assembling under a bridge in Del Rio, a city of 35,000 people. Estimates are as high as 12,000.
Haitians have been migrating to the U.S. from South America for years, including many who left the Caribbean nation after a devastating earthquake in 2010.
It is unclear how so many Haitians amassed so quickly in Del Rio, but a U.S. official said the government plans to send the “massive” number of migrants from the Texas border to Haiti on flights starting Sunday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is closing entry points at the Mexican border so the state won’t be overrun as reports show thousands of illegal immigrants amassing under a bridge waiting to be arrested by Border Patrol agents.
The number of migrants waiting under the International Bridge in Del Rio, Texas, doubled overnight to more than 8,200 people, Fox News reported, showing drone footage of the massive gathering.
The report said a law enforcement official said the crowd is mainly made up of Haitians and more are joining the army of migrants every minute.
The new development comes as Fox News reported on Wednesday that for two straight months – July and August – encounters with illegal immigrants surpassed 200,000.

I know it’s not yours, but there’s so much wrong with that headline. Election Psychosis? We’re plenty po’d that he called it so soon, but I don’t think we’re psychotic over it. Trudeaumania? That was all over by the 2019 election, which is why he could only squeak out a minority government. Plucked from Five Eyes? “Under threat of losing hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue sharing, today Maricopa County settled with the State Senate, in a victory for election integrity and the Arizona taxpayer. The agreement sets up a Special Master paid for by the County, who will get the answers to questions the Senate has had concerning the routers and splunk logs used in the 2020 election. Former Congressman John Shadegg will serve as the Special Master, working with computer technology experts. The Senate will finally get the answers to questions asked for in subpoenas issued to the County months ago.
In addition, the County has agreed to drop its notice of claim of $2.8 million to replace election equipment delivered to the Senate as required in the January subpoena. Experts have told us there is nothing that has been compromised or damaged by the audit, and the Secretary of State failed to follow procedures regarding decertifying the machines. There is no reason taxpayers should be on the hook for purchasing unnecessary new election equipment.
I look forward to getting our final questions answered and wrapping up the review of the election in Maricopa County.”

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors vote (carried by a majority with 1 audible NO) from their meeting today sets up a “special master” who will receive questions, regarding the routers and how they were used around election time, posed by the AZ senate. That “special master” will then work with an IT specialist to answer those questions.
