In Response to DC Statehood: States Should Breakup Electoral College Votes (ie. Nebraska / Maine)

Democrats want DC as a 51st State because DC votes overwhelmingly Democrat. In response to this maneuver, Conservative State Legislatures should consider reallocating Electoral College Votes so that "Winner does not take all" (just like in Maine and Nebraska, see article). This will fix the serious problem of Large Cities dominating the way a State votes. Here in Arizona, Phoenix took our State. Many more States are about to fall to the same fate.

DC shall not be a state! This is the hill I am prepared to die on, and the GOP better be also.

The reasoning for DC to be a state, according to the Democrats, is they have no Senate representation. However, San Diego, that votes Republican in every election, is in a state that has two Democrat senators. To technically, San Diego has no senate representation. Should San Diego be it’s own state, using their logic?

Why would one half of the Uniparty fight to keep DC as it was intended to be?

If conservative state legislatures do it then you can bet that those are Republican leaning states and we would end up losing votes. Now it is true that if New York or California would do that than the Dems would lose votes. So you can bet that they would never do it for that reason. And for that reason Conservative legislatures should not do it in red states.

If D.C. gets in as the 51st state, red states should secede. Historically, states tend to come in pairs for balance. Last time was Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. You could go all the way back to 1820, when Maine and Missouri became states.

So the full article and another link shows that the result of the 2016 election would have been identical. How about 2020? There’s no reason to support a change in the rules if the outcome does not change as a result.

The writer of this article must be bored.

The second this bill is signed into law it'll get shot down in the courts.

D.C. cannot become a state unless a Constitutional Amendment is passed. And please don't give me this garbage about "Since when did Dems care about the Constitution?" - not gonna happen folks. Stop subscribing to fear porn.

Just vote by county. Win a county, get 1 point. Most points in state wins electoral vote of that state.

Or we can make DC it’s own independent country, sort of like Lesotho.

In a few months, the Morlock inhabitants would all die of starvation but at least they would have representation in the UN.

Good riddance. /spit.

“The reasoning for DC to be a state, according to the Democrats, is they have no Senate representation.”

Their argument is that D.C. has no representation in Congress. San Diego area has a 5 representatives in the House while D.C. has one delegate who has limited voting powers.

it isn’t about representation, and it isn’t about enfranchisement.

DC can’t be a state because then that state would exert extortive influence over the federal government. it’s actually pretty simple.

The Founding Fathers left it up to state legislatures to choose the method of selecting electors to the electoral college.

They did not necessarily want states to award electoral votes on a winner take all basis, as 48 of the 50 states currently do.

States didn’t always chose electors by the voters in their states early in our history.

You’re correct.

Washington DC becoming a State, is unconstitutional and can’t happen without an Amendment to that document.

If only Red states do this they are committing suicide. I favor this plan, but it must be all states.

DC will have six electoral votes, 3 conferred by statehood, 3 in the residual Federal District, granted to Congress by Amendment XXIII and not removeable by statehood legislation.
