Brownback got a tax cut plan he wanted through the house and senate, but as one pundit reported, after revisions, it contained only the worst of all parts of the plan. Revenues plummeted, etc. and Kansans were ready for a change.
Grandma Kelly (D) was elected because (a) Kris Kobach (who has no self-awareness) won the Republican primary to run against her, (b) an Independent candidate Greg Orman acted as a spoiler and (c) 28 GOPe former or current officials endorsed Kelly.
