The man was bitten near the thumb on his left hand while he apparently attempted to pick up the venomous snake with a pair of barbecue tongs in an effort to protect children who were in the area, said John Welsh, an Animal Services spokesperson.
Firefighters treated the man on scene before transporting to him a nearby hospital.
Officer Mike McGree responded and located the snake coiled near some bushes. Equipped with tongs that reach about 5 feet and a humane storage bucket, he set about trying to trap the reptile.
Meanwhile, a crowd had gathered to watch, with some whipping out their cellphones to take photos and film the interaction, according to McGee.
The area has sign an uptick of rattlesnake sightings in recent weeks as the weather begins to warm up. McGee himself has responded to at least four calls in the past few weeks, safely removing and releasing two of the snakes, according to Welsh.
But when it comes to dealing with rattlesnakes or other dangerous reptiles, Animal Services Commander Chris Mayer warned the public against using items such as cooking utensils to remove them.

You then need to dispose of the head. A neighbor chopped off the head of a small pacific rattler at his grandsons birthday party. He then reached down to grab what he thought was a harmless dead snake head. The head pulled a 180 and latched onto his wrist. He had to receive 40 doses of antivenin and barely survived.
“warned the public against using items such as cooking utensils to remove them.”
Why? Steve Irwin cooks with his hands and catches poisonous snakes with his hands. Or I should say used to. Stingrays may require a different approach.
1. Cut off the head with the edge of a shovel.
2. Beat the head to a pulp with the flat of the shovel.
3. Dig a small hole (still with the shovel) and bury it.
Or shoot it. Tiny litle hollow points.
Heh.
Not even a grapefruit spoon?

You beat me to it. I was going to suggest tweezers.
He was the only person that I’ve ever predicted
not having long to live—about four weeks later on.
Watching a program from a hospital bed, I’ve often
wondered if the person sitting next to me and listening
to me noticed that tragic following event.
All of my two premonitions have been deadly.
I guess it didn't occur to him that it could be released many miles from any housing development.
“against using items such as cooking utensils”
How are you supposed to cook them? Heard rattler meat is tasty.
Sorry your gas prices are so high but the quote didn’t mention gas prices. I was responding to the reason given not every possible excuse that could be thought of. lol
😂🤣😂
The real disappointment was he couldn’t fork that ratteler and throw it on the BBQ. It would have made some good eating.
Simply nudging it with an adequately long stick would have sufficed.
They prefer to flee than “fight”.
Fecking idiot.

Because Americans have to be told things like that. There is no common sense here anymore.
(Spread the word to newcomer democrat "migrants"!)😉
Or just smash it with a long handled shovel....
Pretty sure most migrant “Demolishcrats” can either handle a rattler or know enough to steer clear of one.
