Carl Mock, 40, who lived in the park gateway community of West Yellowstone, died Saturday, two days after he was attacked while fishing alone in a forested area along the Madison River... managed to call 911 after the attack and was found after searchers looked for him for about 50 minutes.

The grizzly was killed Friday after it charged a group of seven game wardens and other personnel as they approached the scene of the attack. Several people fired at the animal and it died about 20 yards (18 meters) from the group, Jacobsen said.

Officials said they are confident the bear that was killed is the one that attacked Mock.

A company once manufactured 3 1/2” magnum slugs. They quit making them. I guess they hurt at both ends.

yessir, that’s right... 220gr cast lead FP is the go to. I hear ya on the .45/70... better terminal performance on bear.. in my training, we put lots of rounds (4+) on target to blow out spines (hips work too) and create unpluggable holes. Now the unpluggable hole scenario is for a different purpose than the subject matter of our discussion. My carry sidearm is a Glock 19, so I like to roll with with the Glock 10mm in bear country only because I have so much trigger time with the Glock platform... and 15+1 10mm with rapid mag change capability feels good. Yes, I know... the bear is done of you’re done before you run through the mag, but still. lol.

Cuz it inhibit your casting motion!

I carry .357 w 200gr. hardcast rounds.

But that doesn't matter if you don't see the bear soon enough.

They don't fight fair and often blind side you. Not to mention the sound of the river masking their approach.

WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. — A Montana man has died after being mauled by a large grizzly bear just outside Yellowstone National Park.

The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office says Carl Mock of West Yellowstone died Saturday, two days after being attacked by a bear in an area of timber several miles north of West Yellowstone, Montana.

The bear was shot and killed on Friday after charging a group of seven game wardens and other personnel who were investigating the attack.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesperson Morgan Jacobsen says officials are confident the bear killed is the one that attacked Mock.

Officials say the bear was likely defending a nearby moose carcass.

9 mm wouldn’t do the job?

I would not rely on the 9mm to penetrate to vital organs of a 900lbs grizzly. Further, 9mm very well may deflect off of a grizzly’s skull.

Great round, especially with modern bullet design but definitely not enough energy on target for bear.

Think I know which one the bear would go for.

If you could get off 10-15 shots, maybe. But an 800lb Grizzly might just get more angry.

You’re right.
Situational awareness is critical, if you’re alone in the wilderness.
An 800lb Grizzly is devious and fast.

10mm is a good piece for taking down a bear, IF you see it in time, and can get off a few shots.

10mm is a good bear gun, if you see it in time, and can get off a few well-placed shots.
