Airline pilot is one of those jobs, along with brain surgeon, that used to be used as an example of the type of position for which affirmative action was obviously unsuited.
Airline pilot is one of those jobs, along with brain surgeon, that used to be used as an example of the type of position for which affirmative action was obviously unsuited. Who wants to board an aircraft or go under the knife with someone in charge chosen for factors other than ability? Lives are at stake, after all. Anything less than the absolute best should be unacceptable.
Yet, in this age of identity politics madness, United Airlines proudly proclaimed its intention to choose half of its pilot training recruits based on skin color and X-chromosomes:
Our flight deck should reflect the diverse group of people on board our planes every day. That’s why we plan for 50% of the 5,000 pilots we train in the next decade to be women or people of color. Learn more and apply.
— United Airlines (@united) April 6, 2021 Uh, no. I won’t fly on an airline that prioritizes anything over pure ability when it comes to pilots. And, because United’s hub at San Francisco has been my primary airport for more than 3 decades (many of which were years of heavy travel), I’ve generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue for UAL. I was a Premier Executive-level frequent traveler with them for many years. I just flew across an ocean on one of their 777s less than 2 weeks ago.
But piloting is a seriously demanding job, and the consequences of even small errors can be deadly. In the hands a skilled pilot, a landing of a big airplane like a 777 can be a thing of beauty that looks easy.

Which means standards will be lowered to pass them through and into the cockpit and air traffic control tower.
You’ve been warned: Fly at your own risk.
There was a large chicken farm that was owned by white Bahamians (British heritage). This chicken farm supplied much of the chicken and eggs to the numerous islands in the Bahamas. The government awarded ownership of the chicken farm to some of their black cronies who showed up and took over the farm. Within two weeks all of the chickens were dead. The new owners did not know the chickens had to be fed and watered.
Reason #6 why I don’t fly anymore.
United wants their flight crews to match the diversity of their passengers. That means that over 95% won’t know how to fly a plane.
Ya beat me to it (I was going to say basically the same thing)...
And I was just about to book a flight, Not Now.

There was a female poster on another thread who caustically referenced Freepers who criticize female Naval officers.
While I am sure the criticism of female Naval officers or crew is sometimes unfair or unwarranted, I was tempted to add that, in my memory, I don’t remember a collision that killed 10 crew in which one of the primary contributing factors was two male crewmembers who didn’t speak to each other because they were having some kind of equivalent to a “chick fight” or other personal disagreement.
Not to say men don’t have “guy fights”, but I haven’t seen one yet that resulted in the death of 10 men because one of them wouldn’t pick up a phone and communicate with the bridge or CIC to pass vital information while transiting crowded sea route.
Any airline choosing pilots on any other grounds than their skill at piloting commercial jets is going to have to find customers other than me. This is literally a life or death issue, and I certainly choose life.
Oh, and if the best pilot is a half black, half Asian, Moslem chick with a duck with purple hair, then I want that person to be my pilot.
Good post. And as I said in one of my posts above, the “beneficiaries” of “affirmative action” are often harmed by that assistance, because no matter how qualified they may be, it is a shadow they have to live under.
Exactly so.
This practice is going to prove one huge bad voodoo.
Uh ”dick” not duck.
Bingo - in a few years all female and POC pilots will suffer from sideways glances from bug-eyed boarding passengers - all suspecting that the pilots are Affirmative Action grads.
And it may not be fair to those who actually made the grade without special treatment.
Not to worry.
When a United plane with AA AA pilot crashes, sue Boeing
My wife and I are retired and got any travel bug out of our systems, so we are glad for no need to fly, anywhere.
Delta, United and AA can ESAD!
Affirmative Action is similar to a form of slavery, in my opinion, in that it hurts both the implementers of Affirmative Action, and the subjects of Affirmative action.
Kara Hultgreen may have been technically qualified but not safely able to fly the plane. She also said that by the time of Kara Hultgreen’s crash, the definition of “qualified” had definitely been changed...Jerry Burns, who was one of Kara Hultgreen’s training officers, career was ruined after he spoke out....the mistakes that caused the crash was something that any other pilot should have been drilled on and known how to respond to properly...you can clearly see how the plane begins to overshoot as she tries to line it up instead of “waving off”. This was her biggest mistake. Because of her overly-aggressive left rudder, the clean airflow the left engine needed was blocked. This caused the stall.
The media reported it thusly:
K.L. Billingsley. “Jet Malfunction Caused Female Pilot’s Crash.” Washington Times, 1995 Jan 3rd.
https://www.nhd.org/sites/default/files/kathrynlucente3.pdf
Same will happen, only next time it'll be a plane full of innocent people. And United will brush it off as "jet malfunction" - with anyone saying otherwise having his career ruined.
I don’t care about your color or your gender... only your competence. Those who reverse that statement don’t belong in positions of authority.
