Weekly Garden Thread - February 6-12, 2021
February 6, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 02/06/2021 8:17:25 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Has anyone in this audience used Burgess Seed & Plant Co. for their yearly purchases?

If so, any reviews?

My Weekend in SW Wisconsin:

“Temperatures will stay well below normal for next weekend into the start of the following week. Saturday will be partly sunny and bitterly cold with high temperatures in the upper single digits.

Sunday will be partly sunny and very cold with low temperatures around single digits below zero and wind chills as cold as 20 below zero, high temperatures will be in the middle teens.

The following Monday will be partly sunny and continued very cold. Low temperatures will be around zero with high temperatures around 20 degrees.”

So glad I don’t need to go anywhere other than to the barn and to the bird feeders! :)

My friend located the onion bulbs he purchases each year from Menards and they are called yellow onion bulbs - Stuttgarter Riesen. He probably harvests them early when the onion heads are a bit larger than a quarter.

Anyway, they won't be arriving at Menards probably till sometime in March or April and he said they sell out fast so I enlarged the picture at the web site to see who grows them then went to their site and ordered several packs of 80 bulbs. I guess they ship out in May......

That’s one catalog I toss without even reading it. Not impressed in the least.

BUT - that’s just me, and having been ‘in the biz’ for 18+ years, I know that their prices are going to get you sub-par quality plant material.

Sorry!

What is it that you’re wanting from them? We can help you find a better source, if necessary. :)

Good Morning to everyone and Thank you Diana!
Beautiful sunshine here today. So excited to get outside and get things going. So ready for the spring. But so bitter cold right now. At least there is sunshine!

:)

I am not the most rational person in the world, but I can’t for Spring to arrive.

I live in North Georgia and have decided that I want to see some plants grow. For better or worse, I have several garlic bulbs in a pot and a bunch of green onions (lots) in a long window box pot. So far everything is growing well and about 6 inches high. I keep them indoors for now but on rare occasions, I let them grow outside in the sunshine.

Nothing ventured - Nothing gained.

We had light flurries early this morning, but we have warmed up to 40 degrees now. Lots of rain on the way again.

Yes, 17 here too we are just east of Grand Rapids and that lake effect snow machine has been cranked up since the big storm went through yesterday. It drops continual snow from light to heavy as it drops the moisture from Lake Michigan. We got 5 inches from the bigger storm and an additional 3-4. It will keep going until Wednesday I hear. Hubby plowed yesterday and today. I reminded him of the winter a few years ago when we got so much snow he had to plow three times in one day. Plenty of wood and food in the pantry. Hey it’s Michigan.
