Merry Christmas!

I need help picking out some recording equipment. I am planning to record myself singing in small church. I have an air pad. I’m not looking to spend a lot of money but looking for a basic system that records at least 2 channels/mics.

I am very new to this. I would need a primer on the setup. Like mics, phantom power, etc.

Thanks in advance.

If you have an audio club in your area, maybe you should invite them to record you.

When the Connecticut Audio Club had a live concert last year, the poor singer faced a forest of mics. We have at least 10 guys who love to record live music, and they’ve already got thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

Are you planning on just recording off the mix or are you going to mix it yourself?

Alternate idea - if you want a good copy of a small music gig, Tascam makes a terrific portable digital recorder.
I set mine on a table hit record and set levels, then forget it. Tascam DR-40X Portable Digital Recorder
It’s simple to learn to use, compared to a taper’s setup, and amazing quality. Use it for taping local friend’s bands and it’s easy to copy to PC then upload to Archive or other music-sharing sites.
Also handy for band rehearsals, or jams with friends at parties, etc.

Either. I am more concerned about the echo and pickup. I need advice on mics. I can sing from a balcony in the back or on the the floor.

I’ve gotten good recordings of folks singing at church just by holding up my I-Phone and recording them.

For a simple but very acceptable live recording system buy this:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/shure-motiv-digital-stereo-condenser-microphone/5798603.p?skuId=5798603&ref=212&loc=1&ref=212&loc=1&msclkid=0ad5c567d2b91cbea8cc9a81ea9c489f&gclid=CPv06_fp6e0CFQ32swodIfoIBg&gclsrc=ds

Of course, make sure the Apple connection is the same as the one used by your air pad. There are other models available that will fit whatever you need.

The simple app that comes with it gives you the ability to change the mike pattern, eq and gain. You can record a video or just audio.

The quality is very, very good and it’s easy as pie.

Further mastering with Logic Pro X is the next step.

I second your suggestion.

If you need the mics and mixers and stuff you are going to get into some heavy costs. I nice digital hand held recorder is the way to go.

Actually there are some phone apps that imitate really expensive mics.

$20 for a fake $2000 mic.

But Tascam has some really good hand held mics. And with a good audio processing software program you can do amazing things.

If you can swing 499.00 get an Apollo Solo from Universal Audio. You’ll need a free USB to plug it in. There is a Mac thunderbolt version too. It not only has phantom power it’s on board Pre amps are very good but it also allows you to insert a virtual world class preamp such as the 610B which comes with the solo. There are also basic but world class audio processor that come with the unit. The cheapest pro microphone, thw Shure SM 58 sounds very good thru this monster. The Apollo Solo is itself a powerful processor that takes a lot of the mix down load off of your computer. It’s worth the 500 bucks beyond all doubt. The most bang for your buck. Sweetwater has the mic for 100.00, the Solo for 499.00

If you are recording through a mic, you will need a small mixer, a good vocal mike and a good instrument mic. GLS has a cheaper line of Shure knock offs that are pretty cheap and amazingly good. Beringer has some cheap 4 channel mixers. Then you need a good digital recorder. I use a tascam hand held 2 channel to record off the mix. Then you need a nice audio software program to clean it up. I use Sound Forge.

Good luck.

Just vocals. Would it be better to record using 2 mics? I hav a pretty strong voice and would not be holding the mics.

Find them?

They are everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

Not like finding a 1967 GTO in a barn.

I’m still trying to locate my dad’s “reel to reel” from back in the day. I’ve got hours on end of great music but no way to play it.
