So he started talking about racial equity but still made the statement “because of blacks.” There’s no precursor statement that could make “because of blacks” any more palatable. What other evidence do you have that this wasn’t as it seems, because I’m still finding the statement pretty inflammatory.

So a gaffe to be sure, but the OP was out of context, I would say.
