The Milky Way is probably full of dead civilizations

Most of the alien civilizations that ever dotted our galaxy have probably killed themselves off already.

That's the takeaway of a new study, published Dec. 14 to the arXiv database, which used modern astronomy and statistical modeling to map the emergence and death of intelligent life in time and space across the Milky Way.

Here are three scientific facts: 1) there are only two biological sexes, male and female, 2) there is no gay gene, and 3) human life begins at the exact instant the egg and sperm unite.

If you have a close look at south Africa you can find some very very ancient gridlines that look like Old waterways.

They had to be laid out thousands and thousands of years ago.

I would not be surprised if there were many civilizations that grew and then went extinct Right here on earth

The whole notion of a civilization wiping itself out seems wrong to me.

If it took, say, three billion years for the “primordial soup” to creat the essential building blocks of life, another billion years for single cell life to emerge, and another billion years for animal and plants to emerge then finally a few hundred million years for intelligent beings to come to life, then how would you wipe out ALL life?

I don’t think you would. If all higher life forms were wiped out, wouldn’t it be likely that single or simple multiple cell would be hiding out in extreme places on a planet? If this residue or remnants of higher life were left behind, then the life-forming processes would be shorted by several billion years and advanced intelligent life could emerge again in less than a billion years.

So, yes, intelligent civilizations could wipe themselves out, but they would re-emerge over and over again.

Unless they killed themselves with climate change. Everybody knows that that is irreversible and a planet simply could not heal itself after all life was wiped out. (/s)

One of the pathetic aspects to this rubbish is that most likely these “researchers” were paid by the taxpayers through a grant to come up with this rubbish.

Another effort at explaining away the Fermi Paradox. We are alone, and they know it, but can’t accept it because... God becomes a reasonable answer.

100 billion stars in our own Milky Way Galaxy. 2,000 billion galaxies in the universe. And we're it. We lucked out. Makes winning the lottery look easy.

The more statistically likely explanation is the universe, and our own galaxy, is teaming with life. Much of it may be primitive, or even if complex, such as whales, it lacks our strange curiosity to explore.

Of those alien worlds where there is an innate desire to explore and develop technologically, those who have "made it" to interplanetary travel are likely using technology so beyond our level of understanding that it would be like explaining the operation of a cell phone to someone from the Middle Ages.

We can't detect these alien civilizations because we're at the technological equivalent of using signal-fires or drums for communication and wondering why we don't see the alien equivalent form of communication.

intelligent life is fairly likely to eradicate itself over long timescales

Correlation: Dem voters to live forever.

I can think of about a thousand more wasteful expenditures of taxpayer dollars than this.

Hell, we've shoveled trillions to communities to not burn down their own neighborhoods and they're still burning down their own neighborhoods.

I agree. On our own planets exploration bow many journeys to new lands were benevolent??. Africa, Australia, north american, Europeans, muslumbs, juleous ceaser, , ghingus khan, none of them showed up to for peace on earth and good will towards men. Why would aliens be any different.

It is pure speculation, based on numerous assumptions.

-——Much of it may be primitive, or even if complex,——

Think smaller.

Think those civilizations that are actually existent simultaneous with Homo sapiens.

There is one species that presently exists simultaneously and in concert with Homo sapiens. That civilized species is Apis mellifera, the common honey bee. There are some that will exclaim that the bee colonies have been enslaved by humans. There is in fact synergism that produces benefits for both species

Further, there are numerous ant and termite species that are closed and civilized societies with rules and language for communication about which we barely understand anything.

Insects are more primitive than mammals. It is very very probable that such societies exist all over the galaxy

a given civilization wiping itself out in any given century — say, via nuclear holocaust or runaway climate change

There will never be a utopia.
but
If universal love energy can overcome hate there will be no nuclear holocaust.
and
Reason, freedom, profit and loss calculations, and planning will allow individuals to cope with climate change

“...intelligent creatures’ tendency toward self-annihilation”

Can they point to even a single “intelligent” race of creatures that has self annihilated itself out of existence? If not there is NO evidence for a tendency to do so. As others have said this is not science, just pure speculation.

Nice article until:

“...or runaway climate change — would mean that the overwhelming majority of peak Milky Way civilizations are already gone.”

Wrong.

Your counterargument is terse. Succinct. One might say a singularity. In fact, a nullity.

In reality, the galaxy is ruled by time (about 25 billion years) and space (distances that are extremely hard to cross).

So there is a high probability that other civilized worlds have risen and fallen, but not, for the most part, due to self destruction, but due to evolution or deevolution.

Then again, there are lots of unstable stars that when they go nova, or supernova, they can sterilize a large sector of space.

The civilized worlds themselves may be unstable, and out of the blue produce a supervolcano that covers the surface in lava or ash or toxic mud.

Then there are asteroids and comets and rogue planets any one of which could make a planet uninhabitable.

etc, etc, etc.
