Croissant gyoza: Pie-like dumplings take Japan by storm
sora news 24 ^ | 11/21/2020 | Oona McGee

This gyoza with a flaky croissant crust is so sought after it took a year for our order to arrive.

We’ve tried a lot of gyoza in Japan, ranging from Wasabeef wasabi gyoza through to varieties covered in gold leaf and ones made by former prisoners in Kabukicho.

However, there’s one type of gyoza that’s alluded us since we heard about it a year ago, and it’s caused such a sensation around Japan that 4,000 boxes of them have been known to sell out in 30 minutes.

Called Croissant Gyoza, this very special type of pot sticker comes from Tareya in Kagawa Prefecture, and when we say we’ve waited a year for them, we’re not joking. This screenshot of our receipt below shows the order date of 11 November 2019, and the scheduled delivery date — 11 November 2020!

▼ One year equates to 8,760 hours, if you convert 365 days into hours. So in terms of seconds, we’ve been waiting 31,536,000 seconds to eat these pot stickers.

We have a little Sushi shop close by that does Gyoza soup.

I fell in love with it a few years back. So good.

...but inspired by the thread I just grubhub’d Tai - spicy!

“Chris” is on his way to pick it up now. LOL

Actually, saama and some atsukan would hit the spot on this blustery day.

All indoor dining has been suspended by Frau Witmer the Insane, so...

I’m thankful for “Chris” right now.

He’s stuck at a light. LOL

Spicy Almond Chicken, but I got it with seafood.

Getting ready to put on a good movie, but don’t know what it will be yet.

Thinking “Animal House” LOL, love comedies.

IMO, sake was best appreciated on those days when the personal finances didn’t allow for a proper drinking binge while out on libo.

A tradtional Kamikazi.

A drinking glass with 3 or 4 oz of rotgut whiskey mixed with 3 or 4 oz of cheap sake, heated to body temp and slammed down in a gulp.

And that gives a body just enough time to make it back to base before face plant.

My 1st experience with japan was 4 AM on a submarine, normally I had worked up a gig where I would hang out in the galley and help the cooks when I was not on watch, but because we were maneuvering into port it was all hands on deck.

Upon arrival I asked if there was some place I could eat at this late hour, and was provided a menu of weird stuff I had never heard of.

a little old lady delivered the yakisoba to my door and sat the whole time in my room waiting for the damn plate

Welcome to Nippon

Uk, ok. No brainer to make your own instead of waiting a year.

Flour, water and salt. Roll out, cut and fill with whatever. Put in non-stick skillet with water to steam. When water has evaporated, add butter. Cook until burnt to a crisp like the picture or cook until golden to be edible.

I think what works for each of us is determined on an individual basis.
I had been cold and miserable, having had to be outside all day on a rotten, windy Tokyo day. The wind cut through the clothes like a katana!
Shivering and hungry, I met some friends at a local hot spot. Not a Starbucks, mind you. One of those down home, scrappy dives where the whole community gathers. You part the curtains and walk in. It is warm and full of people laughing. Steam rises from the various pots in the center of the room. The owner’s ‘Irasshai’ welcomes you, none of that arms crossed, no foreigner allowed nonsense here.
The saama fish is seasonal and cooked to perfection and the hot sake washes it down. A good feeling and a great memory, remembered long after I girded up my coat and, revived, trodded back out into the bad weather to head home.
