Did they do that back in the ‘50’s, have the vax for free? I'm not seasoned enough to remember the '50s, but I do remember getting my sugar cube (polio?) vaccine at school, presumably for free, in the early '60s. This was Canada, so YMMV.

I remember standing in line for the Sabin sugar cube with my parents. I don't know if they paid anything for it, but my guess is that it was free as a public health program.

Jonas Salk's vaccine got the publicity, but it probably caused more polio than it prevented. Turns out it wasn't quite "Dead."

The first mass vax for polio, was free. It was administered in schools. We had most of the docs and nurses in town were in the gym.

Students lined up down the hall, and went in one door and out the other. After they gave the shot, they gave you ice cream kinda like a dilly bar. Depending on which Doc you got, you might be crying instead of eating the ice cream. Ha.
