We closed Halloween in 2003. It stopped being your-block-only of neighborhood residents, and more of a regional city stampede. The secular version became neither very funny or fun, eventually ghoulish, and expensive to treat increasing hordes of strangers for hours, some as tall as ourselves.
I’m grateful it’s in public demise and that it is becoming more civilized— increasingly in private or organized event settings.
We’ve overdosed on secular entertainment, for decades. Enough, already.
