College football takeaways: How James Franklin botched Penn State's heartbreaking opener

There’s so much to like about what James Franklin has done at Penn State. He’s rebuilt the program from the throes of NCAA probation, turned the Nittany Lions into a consistent College Football Playoff contender and brought a sense of football normalcy to a town and program that desperately needed it.

Franklin is one of the sport’s top-10 coaches, something that can’t be questioned after his resuscitation of Vanderbilt and resurrection of Penn State. He’s won 70% of his games at Penn State and averaged 10.5 wins the past four years.

Since taking over at Vanderbilt in 2011, game management and clock management have lingered as one of the nitpicks on Franklin’s charmed record. There has been questionable timeout usage, bizarre late-game play calling and just enough examples of general laissez-faire handling of in-game management that a sour reputation had formed.

Perhaps Coach Harbaugh needs to keep staying away from the khaki color pants.

It wasn't the coach that ran in for the touchdown, it was the running back.

The back stopped, as if he knew what to do, but scored any way.

I have no feeling about the coach, one way or the other, but the way this article is written, the coach pushed the kid over the goal line.

I don't believe anything I read in today's twisted world.

Here at ground zero for all things coach Franklin I’m an eye witness to his Wokeness. He has spent the past year coaching down his 5* players into marginal 2*’s all of whom are active on social media, mostly complaining about their slave chains. Here’s hoping tOSU comes into Happy Valley next Saturday and pounds his program into oblivion.

All I know is that my beloved Pitt Panthers were humiliated by Notre Dame 45-3.

Bad call at the end.

Yes, it shouldn't come to a bad call if you play solid. But let's call a duck a duck.

The flip side of the article is that after the TD, they put it into the defense's hands. PSU's D was solid for most of the game.

And we racked up horrendous penalties, especially the targeting. And let's not forget turnovers.

There are plenty of people to blame for the loss. Don't put it all on the TD run.

At least Pitt got destroyed...that's always a good thing.

Life is tough, if you think you must beat the other guy.

Amy Coney Barrett put the hex on Pitt.

Did you notice there are 2 Ts in Pitt and Barrett...it's part of "The Maloik".

The dagos showed Barrett how to do it.

Thanks for posting that. The tune was familiar, but the words foreign.

Then you go to the library, hit the microfiches, and find out Michigan had good teams back in the days of pet rocks, fake fur and disco.

Oh, there was a band called the Dead Schembechlers, too. Fascinating, if dusty, history.

The Dead Schembechlers are a Columbus band made up of huge Ohio State fans. My Buckeyes looked very good yesterday. A young defense needs to step up fast though. Penn State will be angry and loaded for bear on Saturday night.
