how quickly can a california company terminate an employee?

a friend of mine just got fired a couple of hours ago. the reason given was basically something like talking back to the boss or not following directions.

also how can one apply for a new job if one is fired in california? can one just say on resume "laid off"? i am under the impression that california is an at will employment state which means that employers can fire anyone for any reason including the employee's nose is too long, or too short, or whatever. is this generally correct? (in which case i would personally tend to consider fired and laid off as equivalent in California)

i am ignorant on modern day HR internals and policies. thanks for any insights.

At my workplace a point system was setup recently. They are using it to fired people making more money. I expect the whole dept will eventually be replaced by lower cost employees either in the state of Calif. or some lower cost state.

Heh, got that nickname many decades ago when I was a young enlisted fella in the Army. Been on FR since 1998, was still using the nickname when I transitioned to the reserves, and remember when JimRob was just getting this place set up. Bunch of us migrated over from one of CompuServe’s discuasion groups when the PC censorship got to be too much.

Back in the 70s and 80s, Mudcat was a popular nickname for musicians and I picked up playing bass guitar while stationed in Germany. There was another fella who had the name Mudcat, and after he PCS’d to a new duty station, others started calling me the “new Mudcat” and it kinda stuck.
