EXCLUSIVE: Newlyweds sue Royal Caribbean after their bodies were horrifically scorched by an active volcano that erupted while on a honeymoon excursion in New Zealand, claiming the cruise line ignored warnings that left 19 passengers dead

It began with a plume of brilliant white smoke, billowing silently from the volcano's rugged crater before mushrooming into an ominous black cloud. By the time their tour guide had yelled at them to take cover it was too late for newlyweds Matthew and Lauren Urey. The couple from Richmond, Virginia, were soon engulfed in a suffocating fog of molten ash, scorching their flesh, pummeling them with debris and plunging their dream honeymoon into a living hell.

Been on a few cruises. One of the 1st things I discovered and a lot of people dont realize is once your on that boat and out of US waters your not in the US anymore. There’s a reason none of these ships are registered here. I guess a lawsuit is possible...sounds like a long shot to me though.

People engage in very dangerous behaviors every day. They love the thrill of danger, both real and perceived. When danger bites them in the ass, they want to blame someone else.

Did the cruise line receive an official warning from New Zealand that they didn’t vpass on to passengers? Or did everyone involved have the same info? If you have Japanese tourists in Cincinnati, I doubt they would have the same info on godless tonadoes attacking that the natives do (from a WKRP episode).

Pretty sure this is one scenario definitely covered under “force majeure”.

"claiming the cruise line ignored warnings"
Didn't the couple ignore the same warnings?

The following is a pure supposition but it is how I can see the problem occurring.

Frequently, one signs up for an excursion before the cruise starts and pays the extra cost in advance. This is logical as the company needs a valid number to make the excursion financially viable. Yes, there will be legalese about dangers and potential cancellations.

Come the day of the excursion and the passengers are prepaid with no refund if the excursion is still on. If the excursion operator has ignored warnings and the plaintiff lawyers can convincingly argue fault and negligence by both operator AND Royal Caribbean with a court victory, then that is the case. Royal Caribbean is the deeper pocket but may be harder to find at fault.

One thing further here, this couple can now have a much greater insight into what happened at Pompeii and Herculanum in 79AD! Sometimes the bear gets YOU! My prayers are with them!

So let me leave this dangerous site to the decision of a cruise line. Where is the individual responsibility

??? Shouldn’t the couple sue the volcano?

People have to sign up and pay extra for off-shore excursions, the cruise line didn’t (hasn’t as far as I know) force people to any such activities.

If it is up to the cruise line, I bet they’d rather have people spend all their time shopping on board the ship.

Effing idiots. They shouldn’t have had to rely on the tour guide to tell them to exercise common sense, and take cover!
