George Floyd's death was the trigger, but the tensions over the Covid-19 lockdowns might also be factoring into it.

But even more, I place a lot of the responsibility on the rhetoric of the left, which for years has been telling black people that the country is irredeemably racist from top to bottom, that all whites are born racist and stay racist all their lives, that police nation-wide are waging a war on black people, and that the odds are so stacked against black people having a decent life that there is no cause for hope, only despair.

Those ideas are like a barrel full of gasoline, and the death of George Floyd is the lighted match thrown into it.
