WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Nothing beats the campus experience at Purdue University, not even the coronavirus. Thats what officials at the Indiana university are hoping anyway, with President Mitch Daniels floating plans to reopen campus for in-person classes in the fall while saying the COVID-19 virus poses close to zero lethal threat to young people.
Purdue was among the first wave of colleges to announce a shift from in-person classes in early March, leaving students, faculty and staff to adapt quickly to an online setting by transitioning course material and operating online video platforms like Zoom for classes and meetings.
Now, as some states move to reopen non-essential businesses and boost the economy, Purdue and Daniels are at the forefront of efforts to put students back on campus for the fall.
I can tell you for the moment, there is strong, strong interest for a Purdue education for this fall, Daniels told the university Senate Monday. We have every intention of being on campus this fall. We are sober about the challenges that will bring. We believe in the value of the on-campus experience, and were determined, if were permitted to do so by the public authorities and medical circumstances. If at all possible, we intend to be open and operating.

Finally some sanity.
It helps when sanity and financial survival line up.
Hanging focuses the mind wonderfully.
normalcy: what democrats do NOT want
I just got off a conference call with a Yale MD specializing in virus in which he, too, felt that a lot more re-opening should be happening, including universities, with one stipulation: PEOPLE MUST WEAR MASKS
Masks stop the spread of the virus incredibly well. Because infected people are often asymptomatic, they don’t know they are spreading. If everyone wears a mask the spread of the disease can be cut to very low levels. Handwashing also of course has to continue.
Wear a mask. Go shopping. Re-open the economy.
Yes. As the red states open up, the blue states will be under tremendous pressure.
And, the American citizens will take note.
There is work we must do. Staying shut is not an option. Why is this so difficult to grasp?
Take health care. All those who would have had heart attacks, strokes, cancer diagnoses, etc. have mostly been home and sedentary. But their underlying health can only get worse. So as a reasonable first approximation all of the hospitalizations, ER visits etc that we have mysteriously avoided since late March are merely latent. They will happen, and they will he added to the usual May thru December demand. If we have ongoing covid, a second wave and so forth then factor that in too.
Our hospitals and health care providers are going to be super super busy going forward.
It is perhaps less true of barbers and police and others but it is still true. The work piles up folks. Ignoring it wont make it go away.
Someone with a brain????? Open school
Someone with a brain????? Open school
It will be interesting to see how long the elected officials in Virginia make absolute fools of themselves.
Right now they are saying no school for 2 yrs. lol.
Once again, a headline that does not accurately reflect the statement that Daniels made.
Close to zero does not equal zero.
Mitch was good for Indiana, has been great for Purdue and would have been very good for the US. Wasnt meant to be.
They are smart. I know many parents and high school seniors in my area are already re-evaluating their choices and offers, and waiting to find out what colleges are planning for fall.
Parents/students don’t want to pay big bucks for online schooling. They want to pay for the leafy campus experience, and dorms (get these kids out of our houses! :) The colleges who offer that will get the $$ and enrollments.
Wearing masks is dumb. Its just the flu. Open everything and the government can shut up.
Wrong! Hospitals are laying people off. They arent super busy and they wont be super busy until this lockdown ends.

We know a few of former empty nest couples, who suddenly have college kids back in their homes.
Normally in the summer, the kids have jobs and show up for dinner/breakfast,go to work and to go to bed. "That "a'nt" happening now, as there are no jobs." Just a whole lot of sheltering together.
And a chance to kill off the old geezer professors who are most likely to get the Wuhan Virus, thus reducing the faculty costs. Semi-sarcastic
Time for some parents with college age students to start suing our left wing governor.
No, THAT’S dumb.
