Alopurinol is older than dirt but still requires an Rx. You could check on line to see if WalMart Pharmacy does mail order; then you get auto refills... your Dr will have to renew the script about every 6 months. Any mail order pharmacy would supply it with a prescription, but I would not trust many of them ... too much counterfeit. Pick a reliable company.
You say 'if there is a next time'. Mostly that is the case; Allopurinol heads off the production of the purinols in the blood {and thus the uric acid} which stops the gout formation. The uric acid crystals can be destructive to the kidneys; I advise pursuing this with a Dr. As I say, I have taken it for perhaps 30 years with no more gout attacks. It is cheap enough to be worth the effort, and I know of no notable side effects. . . . Good luck, and Happy thanksgiving.
Thanks for the info. I’ll talk to my doctor about it. If he prescribes, the VA will mail it to me.
