Al-Baghdadi is the Caliphate. Islam sets up their system based around this leader. If he was killed they could simply replace him.

If he is captured it will takes months before they can replace him since there is no Islamic system in place for what to do with a captured Caliphate.

Capturing the Caliphate is like capturing the king in Chess with the way Islam sets up their system.
