It is not uncommon for potters to use woven matting or fabric to make decorative impressions on moist clay jars before drying them out and firing them. Sometimes they form a coiled or slab pot in a basket, sometimes they wrap a wooden paddle with a scrap of textile.
Or even to use some sort of existing pottery or wooden template to simulate the look of a woven basket — kinda like that moment in the original “Planet of the Apes” where Taylor asks, “would an ape make a human doll that talks?”
