When I was young and one needed a language to graduate High School Spanish was the easy one to choose. College bound people choose Latin, French, Russian or German. There was no option for Mandarin or Japanese.

I’m learning Japanese now... I wouldn’t attempt to teach it to today’s American high school students. It is an extremely difficult language to learn.
