I just wanted to post the jokes - but after posting, I checked his bio on Wiki - you are correct, he has been back and forth with different shows on NBC. Yes, the jokes are good, but without research, I'd be willing to bet that they weren't even Jay Leno monologue jokes.
If you read Wikipedia, Jay Leno announced his retirement in 2004, during the Dubya Presidency.

No, we don’t know the accuracy of a passed-around email.
But Leno was retired from his prime position while still young by such standards and at his peak, which was bizarre for a network to do. Beyond understandable that he ended up leaving the gig altogether.
And he was at least more politically balanced, with some shots at Obama, than any of the leftist toadies put on in the evening by the networks since.

"Jay Leno still works for NBC." Being on the payroll is NOT the same as hosting the Tonight show on a routine (or even stand-in) basis. Probably just part of the bribe package to get him to "go quietly".
