Roku/Vanity

Posted on 06/09/2019 4:22:12 PM PDT by Allen In Texas Hill Country

My daughter has been paying an unbelievable amount to a cable co for TV, internet and phone. Won't say who. She lives on SSI only, very limited income. So she wants to try Netflix. She has two TVs. The big one readily connected to Netflix and works. The smaller/bit older needs an external box to get Netflix. She was told by Netflix to get a Roku box. So I did and was going thru the installation instructions. No problem,,,,,,,,,,,,,, till I get to the on screen instructions.

The paper alluded to having to set up a Roku account. On the one hand I guess setting up an arbitrary account is no big deal. But then it suggested/alluded to putting in a credit card number.

Question, has anyone here installed a Roku box without setting up an account? Can one set up an account without a CC?

You need a CC only when subscribing to pay streaming services like Netflix. I have ROKU and CC on the account for the things I get like Netflix, Amazon, etc.. There is a ROKU channel that can connect to other premium services also.

Anyway a CC or bank card is fine. I have had not trouble.

I have been using Roku for years. Great little device. The account is set up so that viewers can rent or buy movies.

I’ve used Roku for years. Yes, you set up an account with them using a credit card. I was skeptical at first, but have had no issues.

Netflix charges every month. It's a subscription service. I have installed 2 Rokus and was not asked for a credit card either time *just to set up the Roku.*

Having said that, I just canceled Netflix after Obama and Big Mike joined the board of directors. There are plenty of other subscription services, Hulu, etc., along with many free channels you can access through the Roku device.

No way without a credit card. They have never used my card.

You have to have a Roku account, so it can pull the data it needs. I think the CC is if you rent a movie from Roku itself. I’ve had a Roku for 6 years, at least, and have never had a charge from them . . . because I don’t rent movies. J think you’re reasonably safe in entering it.

Of course you can't use their technology without following their rules.

Start an account and give them your CC. I think when I did three Roku sticks, I used PayPal.

Everybody has to do it. It's quick and easy.

You'll forget all about it when Neflix is set up and working.

When you get to a screen to pay for some video. It defaults to not buying. I never paid for anything other then the Roku device itself.

Some channels you have to watch their ads which isn't "too many"
Netflix no ads.

BTW - I think Roku stock is going to split this year. My gut feeling.

I cut the cable a few years back, got roku and an indoor antenna and then an outdoor antenna and I can receive lots of channels OTA many in high definition.

roku has any free channels available but you need an account to add them.

as far as antenna tv try this site to see what ota signals might be available in your area.

Roku does not handle the fees for other services like Hulu or Netflix. You deal with those companies directly to pay them. There are apps or services that Roku does take payment for. But it will be clearly stated... And you must accept to be charged.

I love Roku since it saved me tons of money after I dumped Dish. I pay for Netflix, Britbox, Acorn and Prime separately. I wouldn’t have concerns if I were you.

One has to register the box to use it. It doesn't cost anything to register it.

Netflix doesn’t solve the cable TV problem. You can subscribe to a service that streams live TV to get the channels you get with cable at a much lower cost (services like Hulu Live or You Tube Live).
