The issue may well be the Nepali’s who use the large number of permits to make some $$$.
They should limit it to 20 a year, and the permittees should have to show peak physical stamina and advanced knowledge of climbing.
If not, people die. Hell they die anyways, but the ghouls allowing that many up for $$$ are accessories to manslaughter at least, IMHO.
I read “Into Thin Air” many years ago, and even back then the trek organizers couldn’t even organize among themselves to prevent this kind of thing, and it was nothing like this.
They should just install an escalator.
