Depends on the species of hyena. The spotted hyenas may kill as much as 95% of the animals they eat, while striped hyenas are largely scavengers.

Mongoose are also members of the cat family, or more accurately the suborder of Feliformia:

Hyenas kill plenty of animals on their own. Lions are just as much “scavengers” as they are. I have a book by Hans Kruk, a Hyena researcher and it’s excellent.
