Diesel engines will work. The problem becomes one of delivering fuel for them, protecting them, and prioritizing meager power output, to ramp up not just keep the elites’ call girls warm.
The *real* problem with EMP is a) all commerce stops b) just-in-time means groceries empty within hours c) no personal phones==no selfies.
Most elderly & those meeting medicine will die sooner...flash mobs/human locusts will radiate out from cities most likely ~200 miles radius (dilution by distance/lack of fuel/attrition by gun owners).
I realize that. Nevertheless, some electronic stuff might be kept alive with solar recharging for many months or several years. Some are quite useful. Even a simple solar calculator can be quite useful.
