FULL TITLE: Court hears how four-month-old boy's maggot-infested body was found in a baby swing after he went unchanged for a week and died of extreme 'diaper rash' as his father faces trial for murder

An Iowa father's murder trial has begun after his infant son's body was found maggot-infested in a baby swing after dying from diaper rash last year.

Four-month-old Sterling Koehn had been in the same diaper for nine to 14 days when his body was found in the swing August 30, 2017, at his parents' apartment in Alta Vista.

The baby's father, 29-year-old Zachary Paul Koehn, is charged with murder and child endangerment.

The boy's mother, Cheyanne Harris, is also charged and faces a separate trial at a later date.

Assistant Iowa Attorney General Coleman McAllister told jurors on Tuesday that the child 'died of diaper rash.'

In opening statements, McAllister said the baby's heavily soiled diaper had attracted bugs that had laid eggs, which had hatched into maggots.

The resulting diaper rash led to ruptured skin, and e.Coli bacteria set in.

'He died of diaper rash. That's right, diaper rash,' McAllister said.

He will be a marked man when he arrives in prison. I hope there is someone in the facility who will share the details of his crime with fellow inmates. I picture my kids at 4 months old in the baby swing. They use to love that thing. It would usually put them to sleep within 15 minutes and then we would put them in their crib for nap. There's no excuse for leaving a baby in a filthy diaper for so long it gets infested with maggots. Some people deserve to die a slow and agonizing death.
