I think the reason was that the Brits with Total and BP concocted a plan to get the Pam-Am flight 103 bombers out of jail and back to Libya. They (including the british) came up with this cancer story, saying the bomber who was in a Scotland jail, was going to die eminently. Without regard to America’s protest, the bomber was sent home to a hero’s welcome and seemed to have no sign of cancer. Total and BP were to get control of the Libyan oil fields in exchange.

America was pissed. And revenge was set up to both, keep the oil flowing and kill the bomber. The plan included dethroning Gaddafi who’s son was the mastermind of the plan to get the bomber back to Libya. Real rebels existed in Libya. The US supported those. And when Gaddafi attacked the rebels, the US used the attack as the start of a propaganda campaign to save the unarmed people of Libya. Nobody mentioned that they were heavily armed by the US. With Goddafi’s air force destroyed as well as all his tanks, he was defenseless. So the rebels ransacked the capital and most of the nation until they found Goddafi and his family and killed everyone they could find. Then the US tried to buy back the weapons from the rebels. And that is why we have Benghazi. Stevens was buying the weapons back and sending them to Syria to do the same thing there. It was ISIS that did not like this idea so they attacked the US consulate in Benghazi to stop America from getting the weapons and giving them to their enemies.
