Leaving for Camino de Santiago tomorrow

Tomorrow morning I board a flight from Malaga to Santiago de Compostela then, 2 buses later, I arrive in Sarria and immediately start walking 20km to Portomarin. Most people who walk from Sarria to Santiago do it in 5 stages but I will be doing it in 6 so I have more time to sightsee along the way, plus I will have 1 full day in Santiago after I arrive and before my flight back. Weather looks good in the 10 day forecast so it should be a good walk.

Since I live in Spain which, besides being the country where the Camino ends, is also the country that has the most people walking the trail every year. That means a lot of the trinkets walkers collect as souvenirs along the way end up in car boot sales, the equivalent of a neighborhood yard sale or flea market in America. All summer long I have been going to the sales every week and looking for trinkets, getting a decent collection. During my walk I will be giving them away to random strangers I meet along the trail. Good luck on your trip. We have friends who have done that pilgrimage. In fact a friend is about half way through it at this point. Good luck.

When I first read the thread headline on the main page, I thought you were announcing your personal search for Carmen Sandiego…

I have done the Camino, it’s wonderful. Be sure to go to Mass at the Cathedral in Santiago and see the Botafumiero at the end of the service. Be at the Cathedral an hour before Mass to get a seat. When I went to see the tomb of St. James, I was the only one in the room at the time, it was quite a spiritual experience.

Please post your experiences when you return.

Vaya con Dios! My family is from Navarrete, near Logroño. Ping me if you should find yourself there.

Yeah, watch your step. No “Look Ma, no hands!” selfies.

I did the 500 miles from St. Jean, across the Pyrenees and then to Santiago. Took me 29 days, one free day. It was one of the most enlightening experiences of my life. 63,000 perigrinos made the trek the year I did it.

The next year I took my 10 year old son on the last 120 miles of the Camino. That was fantastic!

My wife did the Camino, St. Jean to Santiago, 4 years ago. Over 300,000 perigrinos made the trek that year. She said it was fantastic, but had become commercialized somewhat.

Keep a journal. You will have a great time.

Sigue la flechas amarillos y buen camino!

For those who don’t know, like me:

And Santiago is Spanish for Saint James.
