A research team led by scientists in Taiwan and [Red] China announced on August 21, 2018, that Earths protective magnetic field has undergone relatively rapid shifts in the past, including one lasting just two centuries. Thats fast in contrast to the thousands of years thought to be needed for a magnetic pole reversal, an event whereby magnetic south becomes magnetic north and vice versa. Such an event might leave Earth with a substantially reduced magnetic field for some unknown period of time, exposing our world to dangerous effects from the sun. If it occurred in todays world of ubiquitous electric power and global interconnected communications, a reduced magnetic field could cost us trillions of dollars.
Roberts contributed to the study via precise magnetic analysis and radiometric dating of a stalagmite from a cave in southwestern China. Via this study, he and his colleagues added to the known paleomagnetic record from 107,000 to 91,000 years ago. A close look at this 16,000-year-long data set revealed that, during this period, the polarity flipped within only a couple of centuries some 98,000 years ago.
Magnetic pole reversals are natural events, and earthly life has evolved for billions of years with them going on in the background. Whats different today is that humans have developed technologies susceptible to events on the sun. To give you an idea of how powerful the sun is, watch a bit of the video below, showing a July 19, 2012, eruption on the sun. The eruption produced a moderately powerful solar flare, exploding on the suns lower right hand limb, sending out light and radiation. It then produced a coronal mass ejection, or CME, which shot off to the right out into space. Its the CMEs that are so dangerous to earthly technologies.

Catastrophic ping
I’m a little dubious about this methodology.
Kind of like my back flip.
Wanna see it again?
This is not new. Scientists have known about past flips for a long time. Since we can do nothing about it at all, and since we don’t know what the effect will be, should we start worrying now? do we blame Trump or Bush?
Magnetic field flips, now will testify against Trump.
Oh, THAT kind of flip.
I was about to say “I thought we could no longer use that term; “Flip” in polite society. Never mind.
There are flips, but what about decay?
Does that mean this compass is useless?
Well THIS should turn the world upside down.
I think we should henceforth
Call transgenders...flips!
#flip
Not the compass, just the rose. One end of the needle will still be pointing north. Of course, a compass with a floating card will require some mental manipulation.
It’s already been known and is obvious to those who’ve been watching. It goes slow at first, then much faster through the middle 50-60 degrees of the process (some say about a year).
With the deviation, activity is faster. That is, magnetic north, for example, becomes impossible to physically locate. Sub-fields form, with weak spots here and there (dead spot over someplace in South America a few years ago, and a reversal in a sub-field once in a while (happened recently somewhere).
Effects are drought (ozone formation doesn’t keep up), slightly more radical temperature fluctuations, increases in seismicity, volcanism, etc. (field movement follows outer core shift, increased jitter, another cause of drought, etc.).
It’s what some influential folks might really be afraid of while sponsoring much propaganda about anthropomorphic warming and the like. In other words, everyone get busy and think you’ll accomplish something, while it’s really about a few people getting to resources first (markets) and so on.
My thoughts? Wear hats and sleeves, install thermal barriers in houses, get the Republican immigration reform package passed (Democrats refusing),...
And watch the movie, “World War Z.” And run for your lives! ;-D
Seriously, though, build the wall.
Thanks BenLurkin. Magnetic north has shifted quite a bit since my edition of the Boy Scout Handbook came out. Using stalagmites to examine the "fossil" magnetic field has been done for quite a while now.

That’s why the UBER navigator doesn’t work.
We’re just one bit on a platter inside God’s computer, maybe just part of a 1,500 petabyte Windows patch download.
We don’t yet fully appreciate the strength of the coupling between the Sun and the magnetic dynamo of the Earth, IMHO. The coupling isn’t primarily inductive, it’s via solar wind. The torques applied to the magnetopause by solar wind are of course coupled to the magnetic core.
Hopefully we’ll someday have a credible model of how trends in solar wind pressure influence components of the Earth’s magnetic dynamo.
It’s quite possible the “quick flips” in the record of the magnetic field were in fact indicative of something happening in the Sun.
Planet X is getting closer. Earthquakes, Hurricanes,Volcano’s, Dogs and cats living together, all the bad parts of the bible. Thank you Ghostbusters for that line.
Magnetic pole reversals are natural events...
I'm sure "science" will soon tell us that capitalism causes pole reversals.
