I am very fond of semi-colons and use frequently in my writings. Not poetry though.

Seriously: why? Are there enough times when you need to have two complete sentences that aren’t consecutive and ended with periods?

What makes the semi-colon a preference? If I wanted a single sentence with two distinct thoughts, I would rewrite until I didn’t need one of the subjects or one of the verbs or one of the objects, thereby creating a single sentence without the pause of a semi-colon.
