"Malwarebytes" virus (bad one)
3/17/18 | self

Got an official-looking update from Malwarebytes. Download it. BIG mistake. It blew-up Malwarebytes, deleted all restore points, cut-off Office 365 access (including Outlook), and destroyed all internet connectivity. Been to the shop once and then discovered more damage. PC now useless.

I also got a Malware official looking pop up in my waterfox in the lower right hand corner. I never update new versions on free software because they set a timer to cut you off of the free version in 30 days or so. Is it safe to run Malware scan or should I just uninstall it and get a fresh free version?

Did you contact Malwarebytes about it?

There is nothing about a virus associated with a
Malwarebytes update popup in an internet search about it.

There is nothing on the Malwarebytes website forum about it.

IIRC when I went to run a check - I was drafting a contract and reading FR and not paying a lot of attention and just let it do an update and new install.

I had a similar situation with Malwarebytes some years ago. I was doing a final review of my prior year’s taxes which I’d tediously compiled over 3 months, nothing salvaegable. Haven’t used it since.

Why are Microsoft CEOs not in prison for unsafe software?

The secure solution is simple, so bad software must be malicious.

I just disabled auto update and install. Then ran a scan and got no popup. Maybe that will hold this off.

Does anyone remember something about Malwarebytes being compromised 10 months ago or something like that?

Obviously you were tricked somehow into allowing a fake update from a malicious source.

No email. Official-looking popup.

Likely from a rogue domain that looked official. As a rule, never ever click on a link in an email and never ever click through a pop-up window. Always go directly to your vendor's software site whether it's for an Office software update, A/V, Malware, Popup blocker, OS, etc.. Always go directly to the Vendor's site.

That's basic computer security 101.

This one is Debian 8.

Due for a reinstall, some of the update stuff has been flaky working. I did some installs of software by command line and find I can no longer use the software update GUI.

Have thought about looking for one of the more secure systems. Possibly OpenBSD. Not sure yet.

I am sure that I want something using XFCE GUI. First used it in Redhat 8, it was not in that install but I downloaded the RPM and installed it. Love at first sight. smile.

Have used may distributions over the years. My first one was a UMSDOS version of Slackware. Think it was called Pygmy Linux. It had no GUI and was installed by quite a few 3-1/2” floppies. Was very fast and stable. But configuring took a while to work through. You had to use an editor and actually rewrite the config files in a lot of cases.

I also got a notice from Malwarebytes on my computer (not internet and not email) informing of update. I updated that and update included free premium service for 14 days (I had been using the free one). That was maybe 5 or 6 days ago.
Had a bad looking popup on internet Wednesday, 3/14. We shut down computer and rebooted. Popup still there but deleted with ctr-alt-delete. No problems since then. QUESTION: I have a Malwarebytes 3 cleaner tool on my desktop that I downloaded in October 2017. Would it be safe to run that at least to try to clean off my Malbwarebytes? Now I fear what may happen after 14 days “trial period”.
