If I recall correctly, China lost the Philippines as a result of losing the Opium Wars. Also Hong Kong.

No, the Philippines was never a Chinese colony, though it looks like Manila was founded as a trading post for Chinese ships. Spain ruled from 1565 to 1898, and then the United States took over after winning the Spanish-American War. I talk more about this in my podcast about Southeast Asian history.
