The answer is they haven’t a clue because they’re ignoring the obvious electrical properties of the phenomenon. But a few more years of funding should clear that right up.

When I was about ten (1950's) we had a noctilucent cloud over northern Iowa that was newspaper-reading bright between 9:30 and 10:00 PM. Everyone in the neighborhood was out side marveling and taking pictures.

It would seem that whenever these idiots are confronted with a mystery phenomenon they have an overwhelming need to make sh!t up to explain it. We know on the other hand that this glow is the prime cause of global warming and is caused by condensed dragons’ breath. /s
