A video of Swedish skaters rescuing an elk trapped in a hole in the ice has reached over 275,000 views in three days. The video, titled 'Älg i vak' (Elk in the ice-hole), was recorded by Sigrid Sjösteen and Viktor Johannessen.
When the pair saw the animal fall through the ice at Bergö Fjord near Örnsköldsvik, they donned their skates and set about helping it out of the water.
In the video, the Swedes can be seen using an axe to chop the ice, making a passage from the hole trapping the elk to the shore.
Eventually, the elk staggers to its feet and drags itself to freedom.
"It almost felt like it wanted to thank us. We were unbelievably relieved that we were able to save it," Johannessen told the Västerbottens-Kuriren newspaper.
That is a moose.
Yep, it is...
At least this part of being a Swede still continues today.
That moose was thoroughly exhausted, and would have frozen to death had he not been led to a path, then gently prodded with a pole.
All decent people will try to preserve the life of one of God’s creatures if at all possible. It’s a reverence of life.
Did anyone get bitten?
The guy who was doing the video should have been the one chopping the ice. I was wondering why the first ice chopper was so wimpy, but I realized later that it was a female. Video boy should have let her take the video while he chopped.
Glad they helped the poor beast, though.
Alaska moose locked antlers in a fight, then froze together
Good on them!!!
Is that a Møøse?
A moose once bit my sister. . .
The Swedish word for moose is Älg. Swedes call them Elks.
According to somethingswedish.wordpress.com:
When people in Sweden talk about älg theres always some debate on whether the animal is an elk or a moose.
The confusion is completely understandable because it kinda means both. But arent Moose and Elk different animals? Yes, but the word älg isnt very specific in Swedish (Why would it be? Only one of the animals live in Sweden). The Swedish word älg means elk in British English and moose in American English. To complicate it further, the American Moose/European Elk/Swedish Älg is scientifically known as Alces. This is especially confusing because there are Elk (not the British English/European elk), also known as wapiti, in America and Asia.
Two moose in the river with their antlers locked.
We used to have moose ambling out of the trees and across our yard. That was before the neighborhood became more developed.
