For more than 50 years, the Russian army has fielded a beastly semi-automatic sniper rifle called the Dragunov. Now the rifles developer has pulled back the curtain from its potential replacement, the SVK, at a major Moscow arms show. The SVK is a semi-automatic 7.62 x 54R-millimeter weapon designed to support infantry on the battlefield. Kalashnikov Concern which absorbed Dragunov maker Izhevsk in 2013 claims the SVK was designed with input from active duty snipers of several Russian Special Forces units.

Good question, the 7.62x54R is the longest continuously used military round in the world. There are other similar calibers which have better performance. They have developed good rounds from the 54R and likely have a large supply, this could have driven their decision.
Looks far too scary for California. Prolly will be banned on looks alone.
I’m sure a vast inventory was a factor, but that begs the question, what would be the “best” sniper round?
I’d guess a lot depends on the venue. Range is a jungle is very different from an open desert. A .22LR is a fine sniper round when the sniper can sneak up and press the barrel to the back of the target’s head, .50 Cal BMG is great at a couple kilometers.
looks plastic and not the usual rugged design ,tons will break
Excellent for home self defense out to 1500 meters.
Well, I guess if you only want to shoot out to 800 yards. The craft has evolved the distinction between designated marksman and long range sniper.
My Archangel stock for my Mosin is carbon fiber-reinforced, and works fine. I suspect the same applies here. . .
Well, in that case they could also bring back the Kentucky Long Rifle, that was used as a sniper rifle back in history too. Long range firearms technology has advanced a bit since the 'Nam era.
I have had the opportunity to handle a Drugonov many years ago, from a fellow veteran that ‘brought one back’. Once you’ve seen one, you can always pick it out from any photographs.
The classic Moisin-Nagant was chambered in 7.62x54R.
The replacement of the Drugonov, being chambered in 7.62x51NATO, also known as the .308Win., shows that once again, the Russians are forward thinking.
The new design looks impressive.
Russians will run out of 7.62x54R in World War VI.
No, I don’t understand Russian, I can puzzle out how to pronounce a word written in Cyrillic, but unless it’s an English borrowed word, I usually can’t discern the meaning
The typical light ball 148gr stuff is going nowhere. The PKM uses it and that MG is everywhere. The real sniper 54r ammo is around 180gr and much more expensive. I just shoot the cheap stuff through the Mosin and VEPR 54r.
7.62 x 54R-millimete
An old, old round. I wonder if they're still working through vast warehouses of 7.62x54.
Mr. Hayha disagrees.
Likely.
Can't wait to be in a meeting and hear; "...the deliverables in place by the end Q2 and barring any underwater sofas, rollout in Q4"
LOL!
