New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

As Seagulls aren’t very rapid through the air, it must appear that they are obeying the traffic speed regulations.
*Having difficulty obtaining takeoff speed are we, WingCommander?*

I love the way animals have learned to use human transportation devices.
Subways are the classics for it. Rats, Pigeons, Foxes, commuting on the first and last trains of the day.

Anything that attacks the brusselsprouts is a jihadi.
Remember, no naked lights near these moths.

Good morning! Don’t these guys look perfectly warm and sleepy?

My cats are chasing each other through the house yowling. No, wait, Shannon was still outside: that was all Jake!

He was all Yowl and stuff, as well as charging around making enough noise for two cats. Then he sat on Jack’s cage, making Jack very unhappy. Now he’s on the back of a chair looking offended.

I’ll go get dressed in a few minutes and open the blind so he’ll get the sunbeam in his bed.

Just like a kid, trying to get your attention!

I have to go to Walmart. That owie on my arm needs more than what I have here, so I’m going to get some peroxide and cotton balls and more tape. The thing is ugly and itches, so I know the infection is serious.

The lights are in the under-croft year round, but at certain times of the year they break out the coloured filters. Or if it is hired for an event.

You wonder what gets into cats until you remember what cats get into.

No. I don’t know how large an area that covers without reactions, so I just got some peroxide and some Bacitracin with zinc; the peroxide did what I wanted it to do — foamed up and stung!

When I get these things, the top layer of skin literally is scraped off, so the wound is down to the nerve level. This, of course, leaves it vulnerable to any bacteria that is on the object that inflicts the wound.

In this case the area is about 1.25” long and .50” wide. I should have had the peroxide when it happened. And I couldn’t cut the dead skin off because I have no left-handed scissors. Which I will search eBay for this very morning.

Anyway, I’ll look for tea-tree oil the next time I have occasion to hunt for wound dressings.
