New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I am not Catholic but I went to Catholic schools. I remember sitting in the Church waiting while our class had confession.

I always imagined hearing from the booth, “You did WHAT?????” followed by a smack.

But it never happened.

Don't let it bother you. Keep pushing; it will fold.

I don't know. My envelopes seem to have a lot of face cards.

Maybe it’s time to found a new college that will be a safe space for brilliant people who want to compete and be graded on their work.

I was at the gym. Then we went to the used-bread store, as we call the clearance outlet. Now we’ll have lunch. Then I’ll pick Elen up at school because Tom is going to stop after his class and get a light fixed on the car. Then I’ll take Pat to the dentist, and while he’s being cleaned, I’ll go to Harris Teeter and check out the discounts and buy some snacks for my choir practice tomorrow.

I went to Walmart and found four 1# packages of “ground beef” for $2.44 each. I just separated them into three pieces per package, tucked each one into a baggie, then stuffed two bigger bags with six each and tossed them into the freezer.

This must be winter. My bones hurt. And still, I’m contemplating going outside to sit with the peeps for a while. I don’t even recall if I picked up yesterday’s mail, as I got far too cold to sit there.

Some wag came up and called me a sissy for going in and I asked him if he was on blood thinners. He said no, and I said, holding up about a half bottle of water, “I am and my blood is just about as thin as this water.”

He and his side-kick always have a large plastic tumbler of beer with or without an added kick. Someone sucker punched him coming out of Smith’s about a month ago, and split his nose. He didn’t bother to go get it stitched up, which it obviously needed, so his nose now has two lobes on it. *sheesh*

We don’t have too many sensible people here...

I’d rather be drinking alcohol, too ...

I have a 4-1/2 lb. package of beef thawing. I’ll make tacos with part of it and chili with the rest, and then hopefully we’ll have leftovers of both, but you never know around here.

And yes, in answer to your non-question, I’d rather be drinking alcohol, too, but that ain’t gonna happen!

My stuff from iherb.com is coming today, and I’m happy about that. It’s just coming from CA. When it comes from Ohio, it takes a week. And I need the stuff now!

Check your account. I’m going to cut up an apple for Kathleen, and then I have to go get Elen.

I went out and sat with Charlie for about 30 minutes, but the wind was just too cold. He would have sat there with me as long as I was there, and not complained a bit. But I just got too cold. My Razorbacks jacket is getting a little thin, and I have to bundle up with several long-sleeved shirts before I go out. Otherwise, the wind will go right through the thing.

So now, I need to find something to do to fill that hour that I usually spend out there. Haha. So much to do, so little time. :o]

Tom and I cut the cats’ claws and gave them their heartworm drops. Now I’ve started making the chili, but I’ll have to turn it over to Tom in a few minutes so I can get Pat to the dentist.

He can just turn it off once the meat is browned.

I mean this little spot of the USA. You’d think by the time folks are retirement age, they might have learned a few things. This place seems to have drawn the dregs of society. The folks who should be institutionalized are, instead, released into places like this, and we, as a community, are ill-equipped to handle them.

There is one guy who makes the rounds of all the Dumpsters on a daily basis, looking for something to make his life better. He even tore down half his patio fence in an effort to be “friends” with his closest neighbors.

He took some carpet remnants and the corresponding piece of carpet padding, yesterday, perhaps thinking to carpet his patio. Management frowns on that kind of thing because of the bedbug problem. But no one can tell this guy of the dangers. When he’s off his meds, anything goes.
