I'm working on an MS PowerPoint slide deck (Office 10). Some of the slides have videos on them that I have inserted from files on my hard drive.
I never had any trouble playing these videos in the slide deck, or inserting new ones, until I uninstalled Quicktime per advice from a number of articles I've recently seen here on FR.
So now when I try to play the existing videos or install new ones that I have on file, I get a message that says:
"PowerPoint cannot insert a video from the selected file. Verify that the path and file format are correct, and also try inserting the latest version of Apple QuickTime player."
I figured I could run the videos on PPT using Windows Media Player, but that isn't working.
The video files are in .mp4 format, which is the only format that works with some of the other software I'm using.
Do I really have to try and install Quicktime, which I don't even know is still available?
I'm running Windows 7 by the way.
Thanks in advance.
Check your settings in your System/File folder. Sounds like it is trying to link to Quicktime as the default. Change your defaults for the XXX.XXX file name on your video to whatever you are using (Microsoft Media Player, etc).

with the caveat that It's Not Been Supported Since January. There are other ways to play mp4 format, depending on what codec is actually used inside the mp4 wrapper.
Yes, what he said.
Download VLC Player
As rstrahan said, Make sure Windows Media Player or whatever player you are using is set as the default player.
“Download VLC Player”
Do this: it is free, open source and plays nearly anything.
I second VLC
Convert videos to .wmv?
I third VLC player, and I run Linux. It plays almost everything. Set it as default for all media formats in its options dialog. More secure than other stuff too.
If you don’t want to figure out how to use “Default Programs” if you install a media player like some of the ones mention or RealPlayer it asks you if you want to make it the default player and on what files.
Be sure to post back and let us know how you solve this...

One of the things that irks me about computers, is that each player should be able to play all formats but they won't! It's a headache to have to convert formats. And I'm an I.T. expert. I have security camera footage from a few years ago and the format is no longer supported. Argh! 3rd-party converters help, if you can find one for the suffix. There are some nice ones that strip copy-protection during the conversion.
Two thumbs up for VLC Player. When you install let it associate with all the files it is capable of playing.
Reinstall/repair powerpoint.
I’m running Windows 7 Pro x64 and my personal favorite media player is the Windows Media Player. If you want it to be your main player, install the codecs found in the below link and WMP will play just about any video format you throw at it.
I also installed it on my wife’s laptop running Windows 8.1...same results.
REMEMBER!!!! Uncheck ANY of the extra crapware you don’t want prior to installing the codecs.
