Aussies with funny accents should blame it on the Foster's, says a Melbourne-based language expert.

Dean Frenkel, of Victoria University, believes the quirky Australian dialect stems from early settlers' booze-filled conversations.

"The Australian alphabet cocktail was spiked by alcohol," Frenkel says in Melbourne's The Age newspaper. "Our forefathers regularly got drunk together and, through their frequent interactions, unknowingly added an alcoholic slur to our national speech patterns."

Its to the credit of the Australian people and their good nature that a newspaper calling their accent “funny,” and promoting research that it results from drinking alcohol, will not result in howls of protest and demands for the paper to fire people.

When you can’t drink the water, beer is the logical substitute.

Doesn’t anyone have a funny accent except to the person doing the comparison and their area?

As a Southern Gal, I think Yankees have a cute accent. So cute that I actually married a guy from New Hampshire. To me, Southerners have no accent.

Actually, Southerners have multiple accents as do Easterners. New York is much different than Boston which is different than Jersey etc.

From what i know Aussies actually detest Fosters.

Why the strine?

Try pronouncing 35 letter names of towns that sound more like hiccups.

They abbreviate everything, breakfast is brekki, afternoon is arvo, good day is g’day, why spend half an hour saying something when its hot, dry, dusty and more than likely a hundred flies will enter your mouth?

Btw i will be in the Adelaide area taking a 5 week vacation from dec to mid jan, looking very much to it! Got everything packed already.

>>New York is much different than Boston which is different than Jersey etc.<<

And the Rhode Island accent is a mix of all three. I’ve been in the south for 8 years now, and although my RI accent has lost its edge, people can still tell I’m “not from here”.

“Our forefathers regularly got drunk together and, through their frequent interactions, unknowingly added an alcoholic slur to our national speech patterns.”

Yeah, but look how handy that comes in now: you can’t easily tell a drunk Australian from a sober one.

Real-life Tommy was worse loose cannon than Pesci’s Tommy in the movie. Genuinely dangerous dude.

Does that explain the Irish accent, as well?
