The Texans have released quarterback Ryan Mallett after he missed the team’s flight to Miami last weekend, the team announced Tuesday.

Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle reported Monday that head coach Bill O’Brien wanted to release Mallett before Sunday’s game against the Dolphins but was overruled by general manager Rick Smith. Releasing Mallett before the game would have left starter Brian Hoyer as Houston’s only quarterback.

They called their former backup T.J. Yates...who isn't even on a practice squad anywhere.

Case Keenum is already a backup for the Rams.

I think a 5 game suspension is more appropriate. The only job these guys have is to ensure they show up for games. Wow a whole 17 weeks is all that is required and this idiot couldn't figure it out. Good riddance. If he doesn't take his job seriously then heck with him. If a Sailor misses ships movement, it is highly possible he loses his job too.

Carolina Panthers have a terrific back-up QB in Joe Webb. But it’ll cost ya.....

Gosh....that’s terrible....the guy’s iPhone battery died AND his alarm clock wasn’t working. What are the odds of having that bad go?

Tebow to the rescue!!!

I'd start thinking about replacing O'Brien.

General manager needs to go too. How could they have left themselves in that kind of QB situation in the first place?

JJ Watt is going to die in Houston and never see a Super Bowl.

Already happened in Denver. Blackballed by the NFL. Seems like the Msm Mime is “He doesn’t have a good throwing motion”. Mine would be, all he does is win!

From your lips to God’s ears. I would love to see Tebow come in and rally that squad. I’m not a Houston fan, but I am a JJ Watt fan. I think he’s a fantastic role model, and I’d love to see him become either a Raider or a Seahawk and exact retribution on the unclean everywhere.

Tebow could do this. That guy is 80 percent uranium testicle.

Absolutely. And it would be in keeping with the Texas spirit.

Well, except for 4 out of his last 5 starts as a Bronco.

Why do people keep forgetting that?

The Broncos, Jets, New England and Philly have all given him a shot, and he hasn’t been able to make it work. Not enough chances for you?

What will it take for y’all to get it? He was a superior college qb who just can’t make it in the pro game. Not the first, and he certainly won’t be the last.

Were his play as strong as his faith, he’d be better than Brady, but it just isn’t.

I was never a fan of Mallett and was glad when the Patriots let him go.

Put him behind an “average” front line and he would literally be broken apart. The front line at Denver protected him better than any quarterback in a long time.
