One of the all-time music greats. Dead at 70.
Performed one of the biggest hits of 1975, Judie Mae, a haunting pop song that still sounds great on a hot summer night.
never heard of him.
I honestly didn’t know who that was until now, but that is a GREAT song!
All time great... To his family and friends, I’m sure. But I’ve never heard of him, or the song.
Never heard of him...never heard the song, either. But in ‘75 I was in remote parts of the country working in power plants and paper mills and never found time to listen to music. It didn’t help that the only radio stations I could had nothing but the price of hog bellies and Apache Nation news.
Just listen it on YouTube, and the song was nothing to write home to dad about.
Terrible, absolutely terrible. And so young.
I think.
‘Searching for Castleman’. Gonna make a documentary about him. I hope he has another song.
The palm pedal is a really cool invention for Country guitarists!
“Owens Boomer Castleman (July 18, 1945 September 1, 2015), better known by his stage name Boomer Castleman, was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He was from Farmers Branch, Texas.
He paired with Michael Martin Murphey in the 1960s pop group The Lewis & Clarke Expedition, which recorded a pop album in 1967 for Colgems, the label that released The Monkees. The band was said to have gotten the deal with Colgems through Murphey’s, Castleman’s, and bassist John London’s associations with Michael Nesmith a native of Dallas.
Following the demise of that band, he went forth as a solo artist. In 1975 he became a one-hit wonder, hitting the US charts with the single “Judy Mae”, which peaked at #33.[1]
Castleman was the inventor of the palm pedal, a device that allows guitar players to execute pedal steel-style string bends. He made his original prototype in 1968, and the device is now marketed under the name Bigsby Palm Pedal. The original patent has expired, allowing other vendors to market similar devices, but the Bigsby/Castleman version is the original.
Castleman founded the independent country music record label BNA Records which he later sold to BMG Music.”
Can you imagine if that song were recorded today?
Pretty strong subject matter may be why. A guy bangs his daddy’s new wife and drives the old man to suicide? I don’t hear that Rupert Holmes song about cannibalism either.
Listened to it twice to see if I missed something ... nope
Yeah I was 18 then. I remember the song being played on the air. I didn’t care for it. It was sick material. It was played on the air and Meat Loaf’s songs weren’t.
RIP.
40 years ago that song was a hit. What a different world we live in today.
Yep. Barely made it into the Top 40 for a short period. Not even a oldies jukebox filler.
1975. I was...younger. Vaguely familiar. If it was on American Top 40, I heard it.

Yeah, the video would be very interesting!
where are you from?
